About Mile Zero Dance

Mile Zero Dance would like to acknowledge Treaty Six’s intent of friendship and kinship with the indigenous peoples who gathered here for thousands of years: Cree, Nakota, Blackfoot, Dene, Saulteaux, and Metis, and all Indigenous people continuing to live here today. We strive to create an open space for all, upholding the traditional Cree meaning of tatawaw, “welcome, there is room”.

Mile Zero Dance (MZD) is a thriving dance-based arts non-profit organization located in Little Italy, Edmonton, where we run a storefront venue. This includes our office and gallery, as well as a dance studio and venue that we make accessible to the community in various ways. The company is devoted to the creation, training, and presentation of contemporary dance, and has produced a complete artistic season for fifteen years.

Since 1985, MZD has concurrently run dance education programming available to schools, which has more recently been extended to community organizations and inner city schools. MZD has been growing and changing to meet community needs, while still focusing on dance and interdisciplinary activity.

MZD runs Spazio Performativo, a small venue/workspace, a hub of accessible, integrated performance creation, training, and presentation. It received the Spirit of McCauley award for work in that community. MZD is a member of the CanDance Network of presenters, the Alberta Dance Alliance, and Theatre Alberta.

Artistic Director Gerry Morita is a choreographer/dancer/instructor who was awarded one of Alberta’s 25 Most Influential Artist Awards and brings to the company a collaborative, site-specific, and interdisciplinary perspective.
