Tony was born in Managua, Nicaragua. He moved to Edmonton in 1987. His first experience as an independent improvisational choreographer and performer occurred at the age of seven. His official dance training began in Edmonton, when he attended the dance program at Grant McEwen Community College in 1991. In 1993, he founded “Dirty Feet Productions”, an Edmonton dance collective which was active for five years. Tony holds a Forestry Technician diploma (1986), Massage Therapist diploma (2005), Dance Pedagogy diploma (2007) and completing a Theatre and Dance bachelor with Sculpture minor in metal.
As an instructor Tony’s concentration is in Latin, Acrodance, African, Ballet, Modern/Contemporary, Improvisation, Contact, Site specific and Butoh. Tony has performed and trained in Edmonton, Calgary, Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, New York, Vermont, Boston, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Honduras, Northampton and Connecticut. He was the assistant director of DanceEnlight in Hartford Connecticut and is now the artistic director of his dance company Tony Olivares Dance.
