ABOUT THE PERFORMANCES

Ian Mozdzen | THE ONE WHO HAS THUS DANCED
THE ONE WHO HAS THUS DANCED new dance from Ian Mozdzen A body offers itself to the void. The void replies … Look! A fleet of original figures escapes — with NO END — from the urgency of NOW. And voilà! A dance has DRAWN ITSELF OUT… because, for a fixed frame of 40 minutes, we’re watching for one. Thus, the gesture — come and gone — kept everyone guessing, as such. MOVE STRANGER, IN STRANGE LAND.

Alida Kendell | break room
break room is an unfiltered and rigorous work that uses Jeanine Durning’s improvised practice of non-stopping. Over the course of the solo, I work, play, break, hide, build, order and disorder. Meaning making bumps up against non-sense making amid a landscape of objects that present obstacles and opportunities. The work of staying present with myself while dealing with a never-ending onslaught of external considerations drives me to make choices that are ongoing and unfinished. There are no defined sections or repeatable movement outcomes; just my unrelenting body moving through space with the materials of my life.

The sound score, curated and cued live by Sasha Kleinplatz, dips between excerpts from interviews and movies, interspersed with audio from home video recordings of myself and my young child. Underpinning the soundscape is a perpetual return to minimalist, repetitive chords that mark the passing of time.

“…fundamental groundlessness. It’s there bubbling along all the time”.
– Pema Chödrön

Featuring

Ian Mozdzen

Ian Mozdzen is a Manitoba-based dance & performance artist who has been creating and appearing in original, independent work for over 20 years. Ian has been presented across Canada — including at Buddies in Bad Times Theatre, Dance: Made in Canada, Edgy Women, Art Souterrain, Dancing on the Edge and Mile Zero Dance — as well as internationally in the USA, India, Greece, Sri Lanka, Bulgaria, Turkey, Mexico and Spain. Ian’s appearance in Edmonton is made possible with the support of the Manitoba Arts Council. “Mozdzen succeeded in fulfilling the essence of spontaneous performance—not by presenting something stillborn to the audience, but by creating and affirming life, whether conscious or in a half-dream.” Julian Zhelyazkov-Zhuzi, Sofia, Bulgaria, 2024. Alida Kendell

Alida Kendell is a contemporary dance choreographer, performer and instructor in amiskwacîwâskahikan. She has trained in both ballet and contemporary dance, completing her BA at the School of Contemporary Dancers in Winnipeg, MB. Her artistry is fed by her work as a collective artist with the Good Women Dance Society (GWDS) and her independent projects. Her participation in the Hack Lab (Theatre Direct) and Balancing Act Canada's Level UP! initiative has inspired her to work in ways that incorporate the experience of motherhood rather than working in spite of it.

Alida’s artistic interests depart from mainstream choreography that presents polished, predetermined performance. Instead, her works are intimate and dynamic, often abandoning traditional notions of structure and performance in favor of non-linear and vulnerable experiences.

Career highlights so far include creating and performing alongside Alison Kause in the Sterling award nominated production, there we are. There (GWDS), and in the Sterling award-winning productions BEARS (Pyretic Productions) and The Cardiac Shadow (Northern Light Theatre
and GWDS). Photo credit | Armand Bladon
