Paper Ship is not merely a dance; it is a living narrative, a visual symphony that resonates with the resilience and courage of those who faced the darkest chapters of our shared past. Each movement tells a story etched in the annals of history, capturing the essence of struggle and the indomitable spirit that refused to be subdued. This choreographic piece skillfully weaves together poignant narratives of pre-slave trade Africa, the haunting journey across the trans-Atlantic, and the indomitable spirit of those who triumphed over adversity. From the depths of despair to the heights of resilience, Paper Ship is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit. Join us as we celebrate the resilience, courage, and triumph of those who dared to dream of freedom amidst the darkest chapters of our shared past.

Paper Ship: A Groundbreaking Return to Mile Zero Dance

Premiered in February 2024, Paper Ship shook the foundations of African Diaspora artistic expression in Alberta, setting a new standard for excellence in community-centered performance. More than a dance, Paper Ship emerged as a living archive — a powerful narrative that wove together the ancestral memories of pre-slave trade Africa, and the triumphant spirit of survival and resilience. This production stands as a unique work of its kind to successfully unite academics, professional artists, and non-professional performers into a single, breathtaking performance. Together, they embodied a story rarely explored yet deeply embedded in our shared heritage — a story now reassessed through the eyes and movements of descendants. As Paper Ship returns to Mile Zero Studios, audiences are invited once again to witness history come alive: a profound reimagining of freedom, struggle, and human endurance through the language of the body. Come and experience a production that does not merely retell history — it reclaims it.
