MILE ZERO DANCE 40th Season | XL
SEASON #40 | XL
Welcome to Mile Zero Dance’s 40th Anniversary Season, XL (for those of you not into Roman numerals, that means the big 40!).
This is an incredible accomplishment for an arts organization, and I thank all of the past artists, as well as Artistic Directors Bobbie Todd, Kathy Metzger, Andrea Rabinovich, and Debra Shantz. I also acknowledge the incredible audiences, thousands of students of all ages, designers, technical crews, arts administrators, managers, funders, documentarians, instructors, communications specialists, and support staff of all kinds, right down to the drivers and cleaners. It is important to recognize that the arts and arts funding has a very potent trickle down effect that goes right to our communities, as most of the money we gratefully touch is returned to community members who live and work right amongst us. Please remember that the works we present are just the tip of the iceberg of what it takes to make art, and that art is work.
Mile Zero Dance is fortunate to exist on Treaty Six Territory, a place rich in history of the First Peoples who have been here since time immemorial, at a meeting place by the river where many people from diverse nations have and continue to meet, share, and celebrate.
As a part of XL, we’ve invited four intimate and physically expressive mainstage artists including:
– We All Fall Down Productions’ “Papillon”, with live dance and music inspired by chaos theory
– MAYDAY’s “Confession Publique”, a tour de force for soloist Angélique Kidjo
– Grand Poney’s “Punchline”, an artist talk that evolves into something else entirely
– “The Brutal Joy”, an improvised score for dance, light , and sound by Justine Chambers
The ZERO Labs, Connections//Collisions, Double Bills, and the Magpie Collection: A Dance Festival in summer 2026 bring numerous dance and interdisciplinary artists to our venue, so there is something for everyone.
I invite you to celebrate what our city has to offer, and to help us celebrate this XL Anniversary Season with us as we push artistic boundaries in the present, with hope towards the future.
Come help us celebrate!
MZD Artistic Director, Gerry Morita
